For the past 30-some years, Kent has been deeply involved in the technology and practice of technical/corporate information development, management, production, translation, and distribution. Over the years, he has watched many companies ‘go global’ … with varying degrees of success. Successful US companies fail miserably in their attempts to penetrate international markets; and many ‘average’ US companies do very well overseas. In many cases, the quality of the information that supported their products made the difference between success and very expensive ‘learning experience.’
Translation/localization of product-related information (marketing/sales, manuals and handbooks, customer support information, websites, etc.) should obviously be a significant component of any new market penetration plan, but important aspects of this component are often overlooked. Specifically, the quantity and quality (and therefore translatability) of the English source content is often unknown or trivialized; the budget and timeline for the initial translation is generally inadequate; and little or no consideration is given to keeping translated information up-to-date beyond the initial translation.
